Holbox, properly pronounced “hol-bosh” It is a rural and tropical island located a few hours north of Cancun. Its clear blue water, pristine beaches and relaxed pace of life are enough to attract visitors from all over the world.

in the Mayan language, Holbox translates to “black hole”, the name bestowed on the island when the first recorded inhabitants arrived here, having fled their home city on the mainland (now known as Punta Coco) due to an attack by the Maya during the Caste War of Yucatan. At many times throughout history, the Yucatan and Mexican governments tried to relocate the indigenous inhabitants of Holbox, but to no avail. Once occupied, the settlers stayed put, refusing to leave their new stunning land.

Stepping onto the shores of Isla Holbox is like entering a secret club you wish you’d heard about years ago. At 26 miles long and only one mile wide, this skinny fingernail of an island is located off the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula , right where the turquoise of the Caribbean Sea swirls into the green of the Gulf of Mexico. Sandy streets, buildings bathed in Caribbean colors, and the sputter of golf carts — one of the main modes of transportation on the island — set the tone for a place unlike many others in Mexico.
